THE EXPRESS WAY
We had the opportunity to collaborate with Danny Lee at CALICO on his TV show, The Express Way with Stephen Curry, to create the main title and graphics package for PBS. By blending traditional artistic techniques with modern animation, we added unique textures and dynamic visuals to this captivating show.
THE ASK
Long time collaborator Danny Lee reached out to Bubba's asking for a graphics package that would elevate his highly anticipated show; The Express Way. This was a project we knew we had to take above and beyond, so everything from the main title design to the lower thirds was meticulously crafted to highlight the artists featured in the show.
THE APPROACH
With a show as personal as The Express Way, we wanted to make sure our artistic approach was as hands-on as the series itself. We started practically by painting and filming the individual letters of the title on a plexiglass sheet. We then took those assets and integrated them with footage from the show. Our animation approach sought to energize the audience, with a driving, drum-based music track and rapid, snappy paint strokes slapped across a digital canvas, before finally resolving on the main title.
Our main hurdle with the design for The Express Way was creating graphics that matched the grounded and tactile feel of the visuals featured in the show. We first experimented with digital assets, including everything from stock images of paint strokes to AI generated smears. Nothing quite captured the realism we were hoping to achieve, so we experimented with practically created assets, which immediately elevated the project to the level we had hoped to achieve.
